Film thicknesses and widths

Shrink wrap film for packing is sold in rolls. The roll width is chosen to suit the circumference of the object, and the thickness to suit the conditions the load has to withstand.

250 microns

Thick shrink wrap film: when it makes sense

Months, not weeks

The longer an object stands outdoors, the more material it needs. For storage over a season or a longer stay in a yard, 250 μm makes a difference that thinner film cannot make up for.

Sharp edges

Steel structures, frames, machine corners. Thin film would wear through at these points. Thick film withstands the pressure and tension after heat shrinking.

The object is going far

Sea freight, transhipments, cranes. Each of these stages is a chance to damage the cover. Thicker film gives you a safety margin.

For pallets and smaller loads we have a ready-made shrink hood made of thick film. It goes over palletised goods without wrapping from a roll.

Delivery format

Tube, half-tube or flat sheet

Shrink wrap film in a tube is a closed sleeve: the object is slid into it, or the tube is pulled over it from above. It works well for repeatable shapes: pallets, profiles, elements with a constant cross-section.

Half-tube film (U-film) is a roll folded lengthways, which is cut open on site. It gives double the working width for the same roll width: our 3.2 m half-tube unfolds to more than 6 metres of material.

Flat sheet, i.e. an unfolded roll, is the standard for large objects: modules, yachts, halls. Here the roll width matters: with a width of 16 metres, a single strip closes an object that would otherwise need several panels welded together.

When we pack at a client site, we choose the format ourselves. When you buy material, we will advise you in the shop on what suits your case.

Option

Printed film

A packed object travels across half of Europe and is visible at every transhipment. The film can carry a logo: your own or the recipient's.

We do this for modular buildings, containers and structures that go to the client's building site. We apply the print to the cover after heat shrinking, so it follows the shape of the object and does not peel off in transport.

We agree the print when preparing the quote. We need the logo file and the side it should go on.

Selection

What the thickness depends on

  1. How long the object will stay packed. A few days in transport is a completely different choice from a season in a yard.
  2. Whether it stands outdoors. A hall and an open yard put two different loads on the cover.
  3. What shape it has. A smooth body forgives thinner film. Protruding parts, chimneys and frames do not.
  4. How many times it will be transhipped. Every crane and every lashing strap is a pressure point.

If you are not sure, give us the dimensions and describe the situation. We will choose the material for you instead of selling the thickest film on the price list.

To complete the set

What else you need for packing

Film is not enough on its own. These are the items people most often forget with their first order.

Heat gun

Without it, the film will not shrink onto the object. We offer heat guns rated at 30, 65, 70 and 90 kW and replaceable nozzles. The power is chosen to suit the surface area to be covered.

Zip doors

Zip doors glued into the cover, for when you need access to the packed object. Three sizes: 50×55, 160×55 and 200×130 cm.

Desiccants

Bentonite clay inserts, 1 kg. Placed under the film for sea freight and long-term storage, they absorb the moisture trapped inside.

Clamping clips

They hold the film in place before it is heat-shrunk. Useful when working in the wind and with large sheets.

Safety nets

For oversized loads, as an extra layer where film alone is not enough.

Frequently asked questions

Shrink wrap film: questions before you buy

Which shrink wrap film thickness should I choose?

It depends on four things: how long the object will stay packed, whether it stands outdoors, what shape it has and how many times it will be transhipped. For domestic and European transport, 180 micron film is the most popular choice. For storage over a season in an open yard, or for structures with sharp edges, choose 250 microns.

What is the widest film available?

16 metres, 200 microns thick, in 50-metre rolls. With this width, a single strip closes an object that would otherwise need several panels welded together.

What is the difference between a tube and a half-tube?

A tube is a closed sleeve: the object is slid into it or it is pulled over from above, and it works well for repeatable shapes. A half-tube (U-film) is a roll folded lengthways, which is cut open on site; it gives double the working width for the same roll width.

Can shrink wrap film be printed with a logo?

Yes. We apply the print to the cover after heat shrinking, so it follows the shape of the object and does not peel off in transport. We use it for modular buildings, containers and structures going to the client's building site. We agree the print when preparing the quote.

What else is needed for packing besides film?

A heat gun to shrink the film (30–90 kW, chosen to suit the surface area), adhesive tapes for joining panels, woven strap for strapping and, for sea freight and long-term storage, desiccants. If you need access to the packed object, zip doors are glued in.
