Shrink wrapping a bus frame for powder coating
The frame of a modern bus was going to a paint shop for powder coating and then back to the manufacturer. It had to arrive clean and protected. The photo shows the scale: the worker reaches the top edge of the packed frame from a ladder.
What can happen to a frame on the way to the paint shop?
On the way, the frame is exposed to rain and dirt. Moisture is a risk too, including later, while the frame waits in the yard for the next stage.
Frames also have sharp edges, where thin film could wear through. Add to that transhipments, crane lifts and lashing straps that press on the packaging.
How do you protect a frame from dirt on the way to the paint shop?
We sealed the frame in shrink wrap film. With structures and large components, we work like this:
- We start with the dimensions and the place where the structure stands. Only then do we choose the film, the equipment and the date of our visit.
- For sharp edges and for a longer journey or outdoor storage, we choose thicker film.
- We fasten open-frame parts with tape before wrapping, so that the film has something to rest on.
- We heat-shrink the film with a torch over the whole element, on site.
Heat-shrunk film takes the shape of the structure, even with an unusual shape and large dimensions, and seals it tightly. There is no slack, so it does not flap in the wind. The frame is then ready: it can travel on or wait in the yard.
Why pack a structure before powder coating?
So that it arrives in the same condition in which it left. On this job, that was the requirement: the frame had to arrive clean and protected. The film takes whatever the load picks up on the way, and the surface underneath stays clean. It is removed in one go, without leaving marks.
If the frame still has to wait in the yard, the film also protects it during outdoor storage.
What can you expect with a similar job?
If you are sending frames, structures or other large components to a paint shop or to the next production stage, for a quote we need their dimensions, their number, the storage location and the planned transport date. Photos help.
We come with the film and equipment to where the cargo is: to the hall, the yard, the port or the building site, anywhere in Poland. All we need is access to the structure and room to work around it.
The film protects the surface, but it does not hold the load in place. Securing on the trailer is a separate matter: making sure the load does not shift on the road is the responsibility of the driver and the carrier. On an open trailer, the film can additionally be covered with safety netting. If the film tears, the netting holds it against the load so that it does not flap behind the vehicle.
We describe how we work with large structures on the page structure protection with shrink wrap film. Netting and strapping tape are also available in the shop: safety netting for oversized transport and woven strapping tape. We will prepare a quote once you fill in the form.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is there a size limit?
We have no size limit. We fit the film to the item on site, including items too large for standard packaging.
Does the film protect the structure during outdoor storage?
Yes. The film seals the structure tightly and protects it in transport and during outdoor storage. For long storage and for elements with sharp edges, we choose thicker film.
Will the film leave a mark?
No. The film is removed in one go, without leaving marks on the surface.
