Shrink wrap scaffolding cover in Germany, at a high-voltage grid

High-voltage grid connection work was under way on a building site in Germany. The work was carried out for a company that builds wind farms in the North Sea. The scaffolding was put up next to a pylon, and we covered it with shrink wrap film on site.

What can you use to cover scaffolding on a building site?

In this project, the cover was clear shrink wrap film enclosing the scaffolding over several levels. The photo shows the finished cover next to the grid pylon. Through the film you can see the platforms and the structure of the scaffolding inside.

The film is pulled over the structure, fastened and heat-shrunk with a gas torch. The material shrinks and fits tightly, taking the shape of whatever it lies on, even with unusual shapes and large dimensions. It seals everything tightly.

What needs to be considered for an outdoor cover?

A scaffolding cover stands outdoors and encloses a structure with many edges. When the cover is not going anywhere, three things matter when choosing the thickness:

  • how long the cover is to stay up, because a few days is a completely different choice from a season,
  • whether it stands outdoors, because a hall and an open yard are two different loads on the cover,
  • what shape it has, because frames and protruding elements need thicker film than a smooth shape.

For a long stay outdoors and with sharp edges, thick 250 micron film works well. Thin film could wear through on the edges of the scaffolding.

We have white and clear film. Clear film is the choice when what is inside needs to stay visible.

The second issue is the weather on the day of installation. In the rain the film does not stick, and in the wind the torch does not work. With large sheets and in wind, clamps help: they hold the film in place before it is heat-shrunk. If people need to enter the covered space, a zip door can be taped into the cover.

Do you make covers abroad?

Yes, we made this cover in Germany. We cover scaffolding where it stands, because it is built on site. We work anywhere in Poland and, depending on the job, also in other European countries. If the building site is outside Poland, please tell us the country and the dates of the work.

A quote for a cover on your building site

If scaffolding or part of a building site needs a cover, please give us:

  • the dimensions of the scaffolding or the part to be covered,
  • the site address,
  • the planned dates of the work,
  • how long the cover is to stay up,
  • photos of the scaffolding and the area around it.

On this basis, we will choose the film and equipment and agree the day of our visit. We write about the material itself, thicknesses and roll widths on the page shrink wrap film for covers and packing. Film and accessories can also be bought in the shop: clear shrink wrap film and clamps for scaffolding. Full scope of work: see all services. You can send an enquiry using the quote form.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a construction company make the cover itself?

It can, if it has the equipment and people who know how to heat-shrink film. We run training for companies that want to pack in-house: torch handling, film selection and heat shrinking technique, including quality control of the finished work.

What film widths and thicknesses are available?

We have film from 3.2 to 16 metres wide and from 120 to 250 microns thick, white and clear. For larger orders, we choose a roll to suit the specific item.

Does the work leave a mark on the structure?

No. The film is removed in one go, without leaving marks on the surface.
