Project
Shrink wrapping a house up to 14 m long for transport
The house was up to 14 m long and over 4 m wide, with a finished facade on its walls. An item like this travels in one piece, and for the whole journey the facade is exposed to whatever happens on the road. To protect the house for transport, we sealed it in shrink wrap film, which kept the facade clean on the way.
What threatens a finished facade in transport?
A house with a finished facade is complete before it leaves. Any rain or dirt on the way lands straight on the facade.
With an item of this size, two more things come into play. The first is transhipment. Every crane and every lashing strap is a pressure point on the packaging. The second is the transport itself. Under Article 61 of the Polish Road Traffic Act, a vehicle with its load may be up to 2.55 m wide, and a vehicle 2.55 m wide up to 3 m. An item more than 4 m wide is already an abnormal load, which requires a permit.
How do you protect a house with a finished facade for transport?
We sealed it in shrink wrap film, in one piece. With modules and houses, we work like this:
- We start with the dimensions of the item, the number of items, the storage location and the planned transport date.
- We choose the film for the dimensions and the type of transport and agree the date of our visit.
- We come with film and torches and heat-shrink the film on the item: in the yard, in the hall or already on the trailer.
- The item is sealed tightly for the journey and any stops.
With large dimensions, the film is laid out as a sheet, i.e. from an unfolded roll. Once heat-shrunk, it takes the shape of the item and seals it tightly. There is no need to build a crate or timber enclosure around the house, and the item does not have to go anywhere before packing.
The photo shows the house in white film, lifted by a crane above a trailer.
How large an item can be packed in film?
We packed this house, up to 14 m long and over 4 m wide, in one piece. We heat-shrink the film on site, so a large item does not have to be split before packing. We have no size limit, because we fit the film to the item.
We choose the film thickness according to how long the item is to stay packed, whether it stands outdoors, what shape it has and how many times it will be transhipped. For large dimensions and for items that travel far, with transhipments and crane lifts, thicker film gives a margin.
What can you expect with a similar job?
If a modular home, a small house or another item with a finished facade needs protecting before transport, for a quote we only need the dimensions (length, width, height), the number of items, the storage location and the planned transport date. Photos help, and you can attach them as a link in the form.
We pack on site. The customer arranges the transport, because we do not provide transport services. After arrival, the film is removed in one go, without leaving marks on the surface. After each job, we draw up a handover report signed by both parties.
A logo can also be placed on the film, your own or the recipient's. We do this for modules and structures delivered to the developer's building site. We agree the print when quoting: we need a file with the logo and which wall it should go on.
There is more about packing such items on the page packing modules, containers and modular homes. Film for packing yourself can be bought in the shop: white shrink wrap film. You can send an enquiry using the quote form.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to build a crate or timber enclosure?
No. The film seals the item tightly and does not require building a crate or timber enclosure. We heat-shrink it directly on the item, on site.
Does the film also protect finished interiors?
Yes. With houses and modules, the film protects finished interiors and facades from rain and dirt on the way to the building site. On this job, the main concern was the facade.
Do you handle transport of the house?
No. We pack the item, and the customer arranges the transport, including abnormal load transport.
